This has been on my phone for ages and I’ve never got round to posting it. For such an impact page opener, you’d think The Telegraph would know it should either be ‘the battle’s over’ or ‘the battles are over’.

Apostrophe use never fails to amaze me. For instance, on this sign, why do ‘ciders’ and ‘dogs’ take an (incorrect) apostrophe, while snacks, beers, wines and lagers get none? Unless the sign writer has some ‘in cider’ knowledge, plurals never take apostrophes.
